This song was inspired by the writings of J.G. Ballard, particularly his brilliantly subversive agit-prop story, “Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan” (1967) which depicts a group of test subjects with an erotic fascination with the actor/politician and stimulation derived from car crashes. That latter bit is hints at the origins of his 1973 novel, Crash, which (as we’re sure you know) inspired Gary Numan, Joy Division/New Order, Human League, and the collaborations of Brian Eno and David Bowie. Drawing on all of this, “Pale Rage” melds massive shoegaze guitar sounds, 80s synths and drum machines, and the sublime vocals of Lisa Piccirillo (Hotels and Highways, Gregory Douglas).
lyrics
Pale Rage
All I ever wanted was to isolate with you.
Hide out from the pyros like overloaded men.
Peek out from the blinds in our reclining chair.
Pale rage, be by my side.
Fucking Ronald Reagan in a simulated crash.
Erotic fascination with this presidential trash.
Mediated vision of thousand TV screens.
Pale rage, watch this with me.
All I ever wanted was to isolate with you.
Hide out from the pyros like overloaded men.
Blurring out our vision of a thousand TV screens.
Pale rage, watch this with me.
All I ever wanted was to hibernate in you.
Hide from Gucci psychos and Ollie North platoons.
TV by my side, his hair shining through.
Pale rage, must I recall you?
